Herbarium and the Office building is an old heritage building constructed in the late Elizabethan style, surrounded by hedges of “American pillars”. The Herbarium is arranged according to Bentham and Hooker’s system of classification. It contains a unique collection of 14251 specimens of dried plants collected since 1850’s. This represents more than 3584 Eastern Himalayan species.

Description Common name: Himalayan Thimbleweed • Hindi: ratanjot • Nepali: Ratan jotHimalayan Thimbleweed is a perennial herb which is very variable, with 2-5 cm buttercup flowers in colors white, blue or yellow. Flowers are borne on short spreading, tufted stems about 5-15 cm long. Flowers have 5-7 elliptic petals which are silky haired beneath. The plant has many softly hairy basal leaves, 2-5 cm across. Leaves are rounded in outline, deeply 3-lobed. The lobes are further lobed or cut. Leaves just below the flowers are about 2.5 cm, 3-lobed and stalkless. Himalayan Thimbleweed is commonly found in forests, shrubberies, open slopes and grazing grounds, at altitudes of 2100-4300 m. Flowering: May-July.
